MidWest is a meeting place in the city, with a wild native city garden in the middle of the Baarsjes. The monumental school building has two large gardens and an active neighbourhood community with green fingers. Listen to the story of our gardens in our Garden Safari. Find out more about MidWest’s Big Five, our urban wetlands and ‘low cost & low tech’ rainwater solutions. Meet gardener Theun, with ‘Swamp in the Polder’ at 14:00 about his experimental station in the South Garden.
Activities
We are a ‘Waste’ to ‘Harvest’ location: Neighbours bring green kitchen and garden waste to MidWest and together we turn it into community compost in our tumblers. Come and meet us and take home a bucket. There will be a continuous explanation of the compost tumblers during the Open Green Day, you can meet a ‘compostino’ and sieve your own compost and scoop a bucket for home.
Come to the cutting library in and around the greenhouse, for swapping cuttings and plants.
De Buurderij and De Stadsgroenteboer are sustainable and local suppliers of fruit and vegetables, among other things, to our local residents. Come and meet these two local initiatives and taste! Our colleague Luud will provide a small tasting of the season.
Important information
MidWest is open Wednesday to Friday and on Open Green Day from 9:00 to 18:00.
The gardens are wheelchair accessible. Our canteen is open for drinks, cake, sandwiches and lunch. For the Garden Safari Audio Tour, you will need a mobile phone with a headset or earphones, but MidWest may have some to borrow.
